The Man From U.N.D.E.A.D. Trilogy

The Curious Case of the Kidnapped Chemist

This is the first of the Man From U.N.D.E.A.D novels and introduces us to Agent Ward and his world.

Ward has just been handed the case of a lifetime. Not only is he working with a fabulously gorgeous woman, but he is going up against sirens, strippers, sphinxes and giant snake demons in search of an apparently unimportant chemistry researcher.

Still, it could be worse - he might have to use the teleportation system and end up stranded in Egypt again.

REVIEWS

"This is an action packed adventure in a world which is shot through with magic, alien creatures and mythological beings from which we are protected by an agency - U.N.D.E.A.D. The story is narrated by Ward, a likeable and self-deprecating agent and the plot is full of twists and turns. It's an exciting and fast moving story and full of humour. It's not the belly laugh, slapstick type but is clever and subtle, using word-play and wonderful, memorable phrases, the sort of humour I much prefer. I am relatively new to Darren Humphries' work and he grows on me with each book. I was delighted to find, at the end of this, that there's a sequel. I now understand there is a whole series planned - Bring it on!" - Ignite (goodreads.com)

"I purchased this novel as a tester. "Why?", you may ask? The answer is quite simple. As a long-standing (lifelong) fan of fantasy, and the different avenues down which it has developed, I have developed a particular fondness for a certain type of novel, a certain type of "hero". There are several literary "heroes", of this particular favoured sub-genre, all very similar to our new friend, Ward. That being said, this debut novel (for Ward, at least) is as equally worthy of a read as the outstanding "Dresden Files", the excellent "Nightside" novels, or the very amusing - and exciting - "Shaman Bond" series. From the very moment the novel begins, you are catapulted into Agent Ward's world of high risk, danger, magic/science, beautiful women and amusingly cynical wise-cracking. This never lets up throughout - not for a moment. While I guessed the identity of the opposition very early on, this didn't spoil my enjoyment, as the humour, the alternate timeline and the fluid, confident and accomplished manner in which the novel is written, makes it both a compelling and entertaining read. I very much look forward to going forward now, straight to the Kindle Store, to purchase the entire series! A job very well done, Agent Ward!! - I Souter (amazon.co.uk)

"This is the latest instalment of fabulous fun from the amazing Darren Humphries! Well it is loads of fun - his books just keep getting better and better. This one reminds me of the old hard-boiled, wise-cracking American private eye books, but with futuristic technology and some decidedly un-earthly characters. It starts off with a flash and a bang, and keeps on going until the end with lots more flashes and bangs. There are many twists and turns and unexpected revelations, and the whole thing is very satisfyingly absurd and exciting. There are dramatic deaths and betrayals - all the right ingredients for a truly tasty dish. I am reliably informed that there is going to be a sequel to this book and I am already eagerly waiting for it. The world needs more of this insanity. " - Gingerlily (amazon.co.uk)

"Someone is raising the dead, literally. There are zombie assassins in Parliament and zombie hordes running riot in, erm, Hull. Agent Ward, the man from U.N.D.E.A.D., is assigned to find out why this is happening and who is responsible.

It's a case that will take him from the dinosaur plateaus of Brazil to mountain castles in Bavaria and from exclusive London clubs into the swampy heart of Voodoo itself, Haiti."

REVIEWS

"a good giggle and the writing is easy on the eye with plenty of wit. Whizz around the occult world like Bond with ouija board. I have read the full set and looking for the next one! " - RL Davies (amazon.co.uk)

"Once again Darren Humphries has written a cracking novel. I absolutely loved the first in the series and the second has proven to be even better. Agent Ward is a very likeable character who inevitably gets in to some unusual but exciting situations. I love the humour in this series of books and it has had me laughing out loud on many occasions." - Emma (goodreads.com)

Do Dragons Dream of Burning Sheep?

Agent Ward faces his largest threat yet in the third full novel of the series. Something is awakening, something so large and dangerous that it might threaten the whole world.

"In his third adventure, Agent Ward of UNDEAD travels the globe to track down a deadly threat. From Russia to Spain to Mexico to ... um ... High Wycombe he faces off against giant wyrms, forest spirits and perhaps the greatest danger that he has ever encountered.

And we didn't even mention the Valkyries."

REVIEWS

"Darren Humphries just keeps on getting better. This third outing for Agent Ward in a fun-filled,action-packed, secret-agent/science-fiction/fantasy adventure is the best yet.Make room on your kindle along side Jim Butcher,Kevin Hearne,Simon Green for this series." - Walrus (amazon.co.uk)

"Another excellent offering from Darren Humphries, a blend of humour, fantasy and wit in the guise of a modern espionage thriller . Clever plot lines and a well crafted protagonist in Agent Ward. " - Dr marian phillips (amazon.co.uk)

"This is a hugely enjoyable series and if anything this third novel is the best yet. Agent Ward is a great character in the Sardonic Hero With Wit Under Pressure mode although clearly he is not an infallible superman, which makes him all the more believable. Or as believable as possible give the situations that he finds himself in! What I particularly enjoyed about this adventure (on top of the usual well-crafted storyline and characterisations) was the globe-hopping and exciting backdrops. A really dangerous mythical beast and a good dollop of humour thrown in makes this one of the best fun reads of this year. Recommended. - Rosemary (goodreads.com)

The Man From U.N.D.E.A.D.'s Christmas Carol

This is the first of the Man From U.N.D.E.A.D. short stories to appear as a stand-alone story for the kindle and the first in what is now being called the Calendar Cases.

" 'Twas the night before Christmas and all over the house nothing was stirring ... except Veronika making eggnog in the kitchen.

Coming to the aid of an old ... well someone he used to know anyway ... Ward finds himself facing the demons of Christmas Past, Present and Future in a fight to save his life and those of the people he loves.

These are Christmas spirits of another kind."

REVIEWS

"I've never read any of Darren Humphries U.N.D.E.A.D books, so when he decided to publish a short Christmas story based around his successful novels, it seemed like a good opportunity to immerse myself in their world. As the name implies, this story is based around the Dickens tale of Scrooge being visited by three apparitions that show his failings. The author's version is a little more vicious, as I'm sure you'd expect. During the story we get to meet a variety of monsters, but the villain is Yule, an ancient god who is miffed at being reduced to an also ran after being the star performer in the deity stakes. You know how tetchy gods can get? Well, this one really spits out his dummy. As a result the story rolls very well from one murderous attack to the next, but with heart. The changes that Yule brings, makes Ward, like Scrooge, consider and re-evaluate his life. Most writers, when emulating Scrooge's story, forget this most important ingredient, Humphries doesn't and the story is all the better for it. All in all, a good read and highly recommended. " - G.Robbins (amazon.co.uk)

"Agent Ward, The Man from U.N.D.E.A.D., stands on his doorstep on Christmas Eve, just as his love interest Veronika is preparing egg nog. The glowing features of his former boss, in the guise of his door-knocker, then tell him he is to visit Christmases past, present and future. He meets his younger self and ensures that Ward Junior henceforth nurses a burning desire to become and agent when he grows up. He meets a present day adversary in the Oxford HQ, then travels to a future in which it appears that he is already dead! An egg nog will never be the same again! This is another little belter of a short story from the man who has created a genre all his own. This is a truly Wardic tale and a great Christmas offering from Darren Humphries. Merry Christmas! "This is yet another very enjoyable addition to the Man From UNDEAD series. It contains the now familiar elements of scary monsters and mad science, mixed with a don't-stop-for-breath storyline and a good dash of humour. Recommended." - rowat (amazon.co.uk)

"Once again, Darren Humphries has written a must read gem of a short story for the U.N.D.E.A.D. series. Agent Ward is sent to Ireland on his most top secret mission yet; demons are attacking a secure research facility hidden away off the beaten track. It is Ward's job to find out what is really going on and to put a stop to it. A wonderfully witty story without a leprechaun in sight, kudos for staying away from the obvious stereotypes! " - Jud (goodreads.com)

"An excellent short (just the right size for my bus journey). It is the first of the UNDEAD stories I've read, so I'm obviously missing some background info, but it won't be the last I read." - Mago (goodreads.com)

One Small Step for the Man From U.N.D.E.A.D.

The Man From U.N.D.E.A.D. finds an entirely different kind of problem that means breaking the final frontier and the fourth dimension.

"Agent Ward is out of this world (literally) in this fourth book in the Man From U.N.D.E.A.D. series. He's facing the biggest threat ever and his most personal challenge, not to mention shapechangers with a lingerie fetish, imps that just won't keep still and giant howler demons.

The race to save reality as he knows it is on and he just might be out of time."

REVIEWS

"This is another good over-the-top installment in this entertaining series. Agent Ward finds himself on a case with very personal stakes that will force him into decisions which will affect not just himself but the history of the world. I find that these books are surprisingly enjoyable if you want a light and entertaining read that takes place in world similar-but-not-quite like our own. I'm looking forward to the next Agent Ward novel though the ending of this one is disconcerting I have to say. " - K Maxwell (amazon.com)

"This has become a favourite series. Harry Harrison meets H P Lovecraft. Very much the Stainless Steel Rat with a touch of Cthulhu mythos. It is not a book to be taken seriously but it is an excellent book to while away a dreary afternoon (in my case the fog horns seemed an excellent accompaniment). " - Matthew (amazon.com)

"And I'm seriously hoping for more! This tale was far more intriguing to me than the previous three, although all four are good short reads. Coming from someone who likes her epics that's saying quite a lot. I can't rave too much without giving the game away, so I'll just say that you really should try this whole series out! " - Rokkan_HVN (amazon.co.uk)

This is the first ever Man From U.N.D.E.A.D. spin off novel, taking as its central character the Operation Director's personal assistant, the lovely and resourceful Penny Kilkenny and relating the events of the least typical school reunion ever.

"When Penny Kilkenny is manipulated into attending the reunion of her year at the Madame Schopenhauer School for Exceptional Young Women, she could not possibly have imagined the dangers that she would face there - dangers that will test the very limit of her resilience and resourcefulness.

"This spin off novel provides a new take on the world of the Man From U.N.D.E.A.D. and takes one of the most popular characters from those books on a thrill ride all her own.

It's a different kind of magic"

REVIEWS

"Again I have to start a review with the spiel that I don't usually read this genre but the Kindle allowing me to read outside my usual comfort zone has, once again, opened up my eyes to a whole new world... And what a world - this book is a "funtastic" romp through time and fantasy, mixing ancient and modern with futuristic, all acted out by a wonderful cast of characters - all with their own quirks - some more than others, but all rather special in their own ways! Oh and all this is punctuated with some wonderful descriptive phrases and some extremely funny one-liners. Mr Humphries is well and truly cemented onto my "watch list." - Ashrae (amazon.com)

"A really enjoyable three book series that is a homage to James Bond. Agent Ward works for a department of the united nations in world that is similar, but also very different from ours. Its a world with magic and monsters that have survived from previous ages and it's Ward's job to stop the crazy-end-of-the-world schemes that crop up on a regular basis. These schemes range from plans to use magic to change the world, to politicians killed by zombies to possibly world destroying earthquakes. All told, this is a fun, well thought out and well written series that was a good read." - Kathy (goodreads.com)

"Great fun, well written, funny moments, and moments of tension and terror. Fantastic stuff. This is a series I'll certainly be wanting more of. A delightful blend of spy, thriller, and paranormal. Highly recommended. " - Ravenstone (amazon.co.uk)
